Thai - Lao Border Market at Huai Kon

Huai Kon Border Market in Nan - Thailand

This market is at the International Thai-Lao border at Huai Kon. The market itself is at the Thai side of the border, so no need for border crossing. It is a local border market where mostly Lao come buy modern things from Thailand. But there are also Lao selling local products from Laos, like herbs and vegetables. This market starts very early in the morning, actually as soon as it gets light. As going there from Nan town takes about 90-min you will have to leave your hotel very, very early. Or stay in Thung Chang. Traveling all the way here only for this market is not worth the time & effort, but if you happen to be in the area then it is a great place to see the local way of living along the borders.

When to go to the Thai - Lao border Market?

All year around, every Saturday very early in the morning.

Where to go?

At Huai Kon International Border Crossing, about 130 km north of Nan town.

How to get there?

With your own transport would be easiest, just follow route 101 to Tha Wang Pha, Pua, Chiang Klang, Thung Chang and then into the mountains. You will see signs for Huai Kon International Border. You could also take the mini-van from the bus-station in Nan town.
