Doi Phu Kha National Park

Doi Phu Kha National Park is the longest stretched National Park of Thailand and part of the Luang Prabang mountain range. The highest peak of the park is the Phu Wae (1.980m above sea-level) and can only to be reached by hiking (3 days / 2 nights). The park was established in 1999 and Phu Kha is a reference to an old royal dynasty of Pua. The park is also famous for the Chompoo Phu Kha tree (with pink flowers) that is only to be found in this area. And the so called Ancient Palm Trees that are said not to have evolved since 1000's of years. At the HQ of the park are bungalows and camping ground.

Although Doi Phu Kha National Park stretches out over almost all Nan province, the HQ and best place to visit is along route 1256 to Bo Klua, about 70 km north of Nan town. So when you are going to visit Doi Phu Kha National Park it might be a good idea to see the Ancient Salt Pits in Bo Klua.

About National Parks in Nan province

There are 7 National Parks in Nan province, where nature meets adventure. Great places for jungle trekking, enjoying nature or wild water rafting. Besides National Parks there are also a few smaller forests, parks and Royal Projects.

Although all National Parks in Thailand can be visited the all year around there are some parks that close in the raining season depending on how much rain there is. The National Parks in Nan - Thailand are best to be visited at the end of the raining season or during the cool season, so from September to February. From March to June it will become a bit hot for hiking in National Parks.

Entrance fee : For most National Parks in Thailand you will have to pay an entrance fee, for what foreigners have the privilege to pay 4 or 5 time as much as Thai people. Although not all National Parks in Nan - Thailand enforce the entrance fee rule, Doi Phu Kha National Park you will have to pay an entrance fee.

Remark : Since 2017 you are not allowed anymore to drink alchohol in National Parks, this thanks to people who can not control themselves while drinking alchohol and start fighting or being an disturbance to other people (or animals).

Accommodation : Many National Parks have some simple bungalows or rooms as accommodation or camping grounds. But not all, check before you are going!

How to get to Doi Phu Kha National Park?

By public transport from Nan town you will have to take the bus to Pua and from there a songtheauw to Doi Phu Kha National Park.

By private car or motorbike just follow route 101 from Nan town to Pua and then make a u-turn at the Tesco-Lotus. After about 50m there is a small road going to the left, just follow the signs. After about 10 km you will start to go into the mountains, with some curvy & steep road. It looks not far in distance, but route 1256 goes into the mountains with steep, curvy roads with a highest point of about 1500m above sea-level.
